What is an established professional and do you fit the bill?

Let me be clear before diving into this topic. Hiring managers are gatekeepers into data science, this book is not. Data science is not a one type of applicant fits all, type of career.

Data science is ideal for someone who is looking to transition from another career, because there are so many ways to learn data science skills.

Understanding what makes an established professional unique is how you are going to learn exactly what you bring to the table. For more on what qualifies as an established professional, check out Chapter 1 of How to Become a Data Scientist: A guide for established professionals.

Why is an established professional so valuable to data science?

When you first think of data science you probably think about all of the technical aspects of the job, but being a data scientist requires more than just the technical skills. Being a data scientist in the field means that you need a variety of interpersonal skills including:

  • communication skills
  • management skills
  • leadership skills
  • administrative skills
  •  professional network.

As an established professional, you have already developed many of these skills and will potentially save the company time and money because of it. Knowing the advantage that hiring you with these skills can potentially provide a company can give you more confidence with interviewing or negotiating.
